But, you also should notice that the HEPA air purifier filters are often combined with few other air purifier filtering technologies like – ionizers, carbon filters, UV filters and others.
One type air filtering won`t be the best solution for everyone, so there are designed many air filtering technologies to meet the requirements. To offer the best air filtering possible to consumers manufacturers have combined several filtration types. Each technology has its disadvantages and advantages, so to help you I will write this article and explain the most common air filtering technologies.
Ionic Air Filtration – Best To Remove Smoke Pollution
Ionizers are commonly used together with HEPA air purifier filters, to increase an air purifier efficiency. How do they work? Inside ionizers, there is negative ion generator that produces negatively charged ions, which attract positively charged air particles, especially smoke particles. When positively and negatively charged ions come together, they become too heavy and fall from the air. You would be able to see the evidence with the naked eye!
Ionizers are extremely efficient at cleaning the air from smoke particles, and they will remove almost all of them. But on the other hand, if the main problem seems to be pollen, dust, dust mites or some other common allergen then ionizer will lose its effectiveness and not all particles will be removed from the air.
Another problem with ionizers is that they create ozone which in larger concentrations can be harmful to humans health. Don`t worry. Manufacturers know that issue, and there are standards they need to follow. Just be careful and read safety certifications included if you have any doubts.
Electrostatic Air Filtration – Washable Filters
These are one of the best air purifiers for the money when talking long term because air purifier filters are washable, and you don`t need to buy new filters each year. Electrostatic air purifiers are based on two stage air filtration principle and have two sections, the collection and charging section. First stages start when ionized wires are employed by an electrostatic filter to collect polluted particles like pollen, smoke, dust and fumes which have tiny positive charges.
Then negatively charged electric field attracts charged particles with a row section of metal plates. The metal plates collect all particles and hold them while fresh air is released in your room.
Electrostatic air purifier filters beat HEPA filters and are very efficient because they can collect tiny particles, even as small as 0.01 microns in diameter.
Electrostatic filters have open cell design that helps to maintain low-pressure drop which results in less required power. Another great long-term advantage which will save your money. Also, the air purifier will be quieter while operating. Bigger power efficiency and washable filters will save you a lot of money in the long run. These filters can even be washed in a dishwasher.
Thermodynamic Sterilization – Best Bacteria Killing Air Purifier Filter Technology
How a thermodynamic sterilization system (also known as TSS) works?
It uses heat to sterilize airborne particles in your house and clean the air. Yes, this concept may sound a bit crazy, but actually, it is quite sufficient. In my opinion, this technology is not the best to use in air purifiers, because of something burning particles inside my room, sounds less secure to me. Air purifiers which are using thermodynamic sterilization (TSS) has a ceramic core that can develop temperatures up to 200C.
This heat kills about 99.99% of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, dust mites, mold, and spores. After the air has been through the 200C temperature, it is then cooled down and spread back into the room. That means that the air purifier won`t blow out hot air. This technology has the highest pathogen killing rate. Air purifiers with UV light will kill quite fewer bacteria and viruses, where air particles are not sterilized. Another advantage of TSS is that it doesn’t produce any ozone.
UV Air Filtration – Cleans Just Living Material
How does air purifiers with UV light filtration work? The principle is easy, they use a particular wavelength of UV light and employ it to airborne particles. Certain wavelengths of UV can be deadly to small organisms, like bacteria, fungus, mildew, mold, and yeast sport. UV light can destroy Even a virus molecular bonds. That is the key reason they are used in schools, laboratories, and hospitals. Decades ago UV light was also used in swimming pools until someone discovered that it is cheaper to use chlorine. It is a much cheaper solution for swimming pools but not the healthier one.
UV filters are almost always combined with HEPA or other filters. It`s because UV light can`t remove non-living materials like odors, fumes, gasses and dust. For example, an air purifier with both UV and
HEPA filters will be much more efficient and clean air from both living bacterias and nonliving dust. There are also air purifiers with germicidal UV light, but I don`t recommend to buy them because they produce ozone.
